The Humanising Pedagogy Project at Nelson Mandela University responds to the urgent need for educational transformation by challenging systemic inequalities and cultural disconnection rooted in colonial legacies. Grounded in the principles of Humanising Pedagogy and a Pedagogy of Care, the project seeks to foster inclusive, equitable, and culturally relevant learning environments that honour the diverse identities and experiences of all students.
By integrating Africanisation, care, and critical reflection into teaching practices, the project aims to dismantle dehumanising models of education and replace them with approaches that promote connection, empathy, and critical consciousness. Activities such as workshops, seminars, faculty conversations, fellowships, and research initiatives support this mission, encouraging both academics and students to co-create meaningful learning experiences.
Through design thinking and praxis, the project builds capacity for educational change, guiding participants through cycles of reflection, ideation, and implementation. In doing so, Mandela University aspires to lead in shaping pedagogy that is deeply rooted in Africa’s cultural contexts while contributing to global conversations on justice, care, and the future of education.
