The Humanising Pedagogy (HP) Project at Nelson Mandela University hosts a dynamic range of webinars and seminars throughout each year, creating spaces for critical dialogue on inclusive, ethical, and socially responsive educational practices. These events bring together thought leaders, researchers, and educators who are committed to reimagining teaching and learning in ways that honour students' diverse experiences and promote human dignity in higher education.
In 2024, the HP programme offered a compelling series of engagements that examined the intersection of technology, justice, and pedagogy. Highlights included a webinar by Professor Michael van Wyk from UNISA, who explored how generative AI (GenAI) can either support or undermine humanisation in education, depending on its use. Grounded in human-centered AI principles and aligned with South Africa’s National AI Policy Framework, his session called for regulation rooted in transparency, accountability, and inclusivity. Equally impactful were seminars by Prof Thasmai Dhurumraj, 2024 HP research mentor, who presented at the HP Praxis and Writing Retreat. Her sessions, inspired by Noddings’ ethic-of-care, encouraged educators to embed empathy, care, and justice across disciplines, reaffirming HP’s commitment to teaching that responds meaningfully to students’ emotional and contextual realities. Collectively, these events advanced the HP project’s mission to cultivate ethically innovative and deeply human-centred approaches to education. The HP team is excited for more webinars and seminars to come in 2025
